The first part of the conference addressed the program «Global Challenge — Artificial Intelligence for Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)». The Chairman of the Skolkovo Foundation and the chair of the program’s jury panel Arkady Dvorkovich emphasized the relevance of AI in the context of SDGs.

Arkady Dvorkovich, Chairman of the Skolkovo Foundation: “We see high potential in the usage of AI-based technologies to achieve some of the Sustainable Development Goals, in particular, those in healthcare, education, and where it comes to the provision of necessary digitalized services to the global economy and population. I am glad that Russian companies are at the leading edge of these technologies..”

Five teams became awardees of the program «Global Challenge — Artificial Intelligence for Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)». Arkady Dvorkovich, who is also the FIDE President, announced the first awardee – idChess – the platform for recognizing and analyzing chess games.

The members of the jury panel selected the winners in special nominations from the program partners:

Viacheslav Tsyganov, Tinkoff — SOL platform, a platform for organization of remote sign language interpretation.

Anton Pleshkov, Marine Innovation — BIOGEOHAB-UVA (Biological and Geomorphology Habitat Underwater Video Analysis), a software for automatic identification of biological communities and geomorphological features of the seabed by photo and video analysis for seascapes mapping and monitoring ecosystems.

Sergey Shilov, Digital Economy League — Oz Forensics, a biometric platform for fast and secure human identification.

Maxim Fedorov, Skoltech — EMBLE, a software suite for monitoring and functional diagnostics of equine internal organs using DeepSound AI©️ neural network technology.

The conference included discussions with the mentors — the leaders of the largest IT companies. The experts talked about regulatory barriers, which are inevitable when entering international markets, and focused on the details of cooperation between startups and giant tech corporations.

In conclusion, Sergey Dutov, the founder of Sk[ai]HUB project and “Global Challenge — Artificial Intelligence for Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)” program, for the first time has introduced the interactive map of AI cases for SDGs. It is aimed at drawing the attention of major corporations and technology-based startups to the UN's SDGs. As for now, this map has 40 cases from the companies-finalists of the program; however, after some time it will be supplemented with the projects aimed at the SDGs implementation. This is an important tool to select and promote technology solutions that correspond with the UN’s SDGs.

Kirill Kaem, Senior Vice President for Innovations, Skolkovo Foundation: “The Foundation has several initiatives facilitating the development of AI technologies. We are working with the federal projects within the National Strategy for Development of Artificial Intelligence for the period until 2030. Among the support measures of this strategy implementation, there is TechExplorer accelerator, with its last cycle devoted to the new AI-based technologies. In fact, we use these methodologies for startup acceleration, as agreed with MIT. Our 10-year expertise in the development of technology-based enterprises in Russia is extremely helpful here.

In the face of the rapid growth of AI technologies, special attention was given to the best practices that provide systematic support for the development of new solutions. As was told by the Skolkovo TechExplorer co-founders — Sergey Khodakov and Evgeny Sheenko. They also summarized the program’s results. Thirteen finalists presented their solutions in the following areas: finance, the preservation of marine ecosystems, and digital transformation. The winners are:

1st place: Electronic platforms, service "Examus" for creating powerful scalable tools for online proctoring.

2nd place: Scan Graph, Seascan service for the survey of sea bed infrastructure with the technology of obtaining 3D acoustic images on the bottom with a high resolution, its analysis and identification using AI technologies.

3rd place: MVTech, a hybrid technology of registration of multi-wave seismic data for multi-component marine seismic exploration.

Pekka Viljakainen, member of the Skolkovo Foundation Council: “I look at AI from the investor point; we should use it to earn money. 25 years ago I did programming for the first online bank. Now in Helsinki you can see many self-driving cars, while iPhones make our life more comfortable and save our time. AI boosts our performance and efficiency. I make my investments in the B2B segment. Of course, there is much to be done manually to enhance AI, but I am sure that together with the Skolkovo Foundation we’ll be able to help rising and promising startups. Now we have a bit of a personnel gap, but we have to train staff and enter the international scene.”

The experts also discussed the support measures in the area of AI technologies as part of the National Strategy for Development of Artificial Intelligence. Skolkovo Legal IP Center presented the results of patent landscaping in Russia and worldwide, and Skolkovo IT Cluster presented its analytical report “Deep Tech Almanac” devoted to the development of in-depth technologies in Russia; it is expected for release in late December.
